About TERT

The New Mexico Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce (NM TERT) is part of a national initiative designed to deploy trained 9-1-1 professionals to assist Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) during times of disaster, critical staffing shortages, or large-scale emergencies.

Modeled after the National Joint TERT Initiative (NJTI)—a partnership between APCO International and NENA—NM TERT provides a structured way to offer mutual aid both within New Mexico and to other states when requested. Our team is made up of skilled telecommunicators and supervisors who are trained to step in and support emergency communications operations when the need arises.

Following past natural and man-made disasters, one of the biggest challenges for public safety communications centers has been maintaining adequate staffing. NM TERT helps solve that problem by having pre-identified, credentialed personnel ready for rapid deployment to affected areas.

In coordination with NJTI, NM TERT works to ensure:

  • Teams are NIMS-compliant and properly credentialed

  • Members are trained in standardized deployment procedures

  • Communications centers are prepared for system outages, evacuations, and personnel loss

  • Support is available not only at PSAPs, but also in field command environments when needed

We proudly align with NJTI’s national partnerships, including NEMA, IAEM, and FEMA, to ensure New Mexico remains ready to respond, support, and rebuild when disaster strikes.
